Eastpak is a leading brand in the creation of eclectic and creative backpacks, accessories, and travel bags, suited to a casual and urban style. Founded in 1952 by Monte Goldman under the name Eastern Canvas Products Inc., Eastpak began its journey by creating bags and backpacks for the U.S. military, focusing on the design of highly durable military bags and duffel bags.
Thanks to an initial contract with the Pentagon, the line quickly became a success and encouraged Goldman to continue exploring new production methods, colors, and backpack patterns, which brought the Eastpak brand to a wide audience of young people, turning it into a mass-market style phenomenon.
In 1981, Eastpak backpacks became all the rage among teenagers on the U.S. East Coast, thanks in part to the introduction of a lifetime warranty on the brand’s products. In the late 1980s, Eastpak became the first brand to incorporate the bright colors and printed patterns typical of the era into its backpacks and duffel bags. This marked the beginning of Eastpak’s new era as a consumer brand, primarily geared toward lovers of urban style.
In the 2000s, however, Eastpak’s first collaborations with international artists and designers took shape, cementing the brand’s definitive success as a creator of backpack and school bag lines considered true works of art within Urban Pop culture.
