Ryanair has announced significant changes to its travel policies. The changes include a requirement for boarding passes—which must now be presented in digital format or printed at home—stricter restrictions on carry-on luggage, and new fines for those who fail to comply with the rules. The well-known low-cost airline Ryanair has announced significant new changes to its travel terms and conditions, which will take effect in May 2025. In this article, we’ll summarize all the changes so you won’t be caught off guard by costly surprises before your next flight.
Boarding pass: It’s now mandatory to have one from home
While it is currently possible to print your boarding pass directly at the airline’s check-in counters, starting in May 2025, this will no longer be the case: Ryanair has decided that it will only accept boarding passes printed at home or downloaded digitally to your smartphone via the Ryanair app or the official website. Therefore, you’ll need to save your boarding pass in your digital wallet or in your smartphone’s file storage as a PDF.
Stricter rules for carry-on luggage
The Irish airline’s regulations have always been very strict, and with the new rules taking effect in May 2025, they will become even more stringent: a new €70 fine will be imposed on passengers who bring carry-on luggage that exceeds the permitted dimensions. New penalties for those who don't follow the rules
In addition to fines for oversized luggage, there is a new significant penalty that Ryanair plans to include in its contract of carriage: if you arrive late for check-in or fail to board the flight, a €120 penalty will be imposed, which is, of course, in addition to the cost of missing the flight.
In a statement, Federconsumatori has already expressed its opposition to these new penalties and rules, which only serve to further increase the hidden costs borne by consumers. Surcharges and extra services can drive up the cost of low-cost airline tickets, often making them less affordable than those of traditional airlines.
All we can do now is wait for this new Ryanair regulation regarding baggage and check-in to take effect.
